Burning Man 2019

THE EXODUS

by Maryan Zalusky

In the end, amidst such a mundane act as packing and leaving, the Burning Man Exodus remained a sight to behold. Merely a few hours before my walk with the camera, every square foot of Black Rock City was buzzing with the excited chatter of crowds, camps and the booming sound of passing art cars. Suddenly, the whole town has fallen into silence. After 10 days of mind-bending otherworldly experiences, it was finally time to leave. The endless rows of RVs, vans and tents that comprised a neatly organized temporal city of some 70,000 residents started to vacate, slowly turning it into a deserted, post-apocalyptic like landscape lit by the setting sun. This was a golden hour like no other I have ever experienced. Peaceful and bitter-sweet in its eeriness, it will always be a place and a time that I long for.
